Students and staff of Soaring Heights Schools in Altoona and State College recently teamed up and provided 60 letters and colored pictures to the program “No Trainee Left Behind.”
The program selects a committee who commits to writing letters to those in basic training to provide encouragement and friendship. Students have been learning about veterans by visiting the Veterans’ Hospital and the Veterans’ Wall in Altoona, and have learned to respect the American flag by standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance daily. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to show their appreciation to those who chose to give so much. Meet Ned Moore! Ned is the Transition Coordinator for the Transition Program at SHS Altoona. This program provides education and life skills to students who are 15 years of age and older. These skills provide the students with the experiences and knowledge they need to prepare them for life after school. Ned also enjoys helping the students prepare lunch every Thursday.
In January, students at SHS Altoona had the opportunity to learn about many different types of fossils. They participated in several projects, from learning to take data as they watched orange peels dry separately or buried in the dirt to preserve them, to making their own molds and tracing fossils using chicken bones from their lunch, seashells, orange peels and their own fingerprints. Students enjoyed the projects and are set to become future paleontologists!
Students from the Altoona and State College Soaring Heights Schools campuses visited the residents at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and conducted caroling. Students sang various seasonal carols and also presented small gifts to the residents. Students then went to the Altoona school site for lunch and seasonal activities.
