Dr. Melissa Hunter conducted the first of her three free parent trainings at Soaring Heights School in State College on Tuesday, September 13.
Dr. Hunter has been a behavioral consultant for Pyramid Healthcare, Soaring Heights School’s treatment partner, since 2008. She was able to apply behavioral techniques that are utilized in the classroom to home and community settings.
She examined the pragmatic difficulties that autistic children present, such as theory of mind, which explains why autistic people may struggle to see other points of view. She also reviewed cognitive strengths and adaptive skills.
On October 11, SHS and Dr. Hunter will offer another free presentation for parents that focuses on adaptive skills for home and for the community. The training begins at
5:30 PM and ends at 7 PM.
